Essential Concepts in Montessori Teaching

Sensitive Periods
These periods are “windows of opportunity,” when children learn naturally, quickly, and with minimal effort. The Montessori method focuses on recognizing these moments and using them purposefully to support certain learning and developmental steps. Montessori teachers are trained in child development and guide each child to the right activity, in the right way, at the right time.

Individualized Learning Methods
Children make many choices in their daily activities and take responsibility for their own learning. They learn to assess their abilities, build perseverance and self-discipline, set goals, make decisions, and collaborate with others. Montessori teachers guide a classroom where children develop at their own pace and support them in overcoming challenges.

Observation
Children are at the center of the Montessori classroom. The teachers observe and guide – paying attention to children’s evolving interests, developmental needs, and emotions. They support independent work and intervene when necessary.

The prepared environment offers children freedom to move and the ability to act independently. A typical Montessori classroom has low open shelves, carefully arranged materials in progressive order, clearly defined learning areas, and child-sized furniture. Montessori materials are designed to help children develop skills and abilities independently after an introduction by the teacher.

Mixed Age Grouping
Children are grouped according to developmental stages: 4–18 months, 1–3 years, 3–6 years and 6–12 years.

In Montessori kindergarten, children are placed in mixed-age groups spanning three years. This structure allows them to experience the full curriculum, starting as the youngest and gradually growing into leadership roles. Older children naturally support and guide younger ones, creating a collaborative learning community.

After completing the 3-year cycle in kindergarten, children can continue in our Montessori Elementary school or enter the 1st grade of a local public school.
